What is stormchasing?

What is stormchasing?

In late March through June of each year, wildly contrasting air masses clash over the Midwestern United States in a unique atmospheric environment found nowhere else in the world. Cold, dry air dropping south and east over the Rocky Mountains collides with waves of hot, moisture-rich air advancing north out of the Gulf of Mexico, resulting in violent atmospheric turbulence above an expansive stretch of open farmlands and the beautiful, unforested landscapes of the Midwestern United States.

Massive, rotating thunderstorms explode skyward where these airmasses intersect, often exceeding 60,000 feet or more in height. While forecasters can predict these storm complexes developing days in advance, experienced stormchasers dig in to the constantly evolving microclimates and the tiny minutiae of weather soundings to pinpoint exactly where the most violent storm cells will erupt and unleash their unbridled fury upon the Great Plains.

And when we say ‘exactly’, we mean exactly! Talented stormchasers like meteorologist Brandon Ivey of stormchasingtour.com employ incredibly complex forecasting techniques, visual cues, and years of interpreting storm data and behavior to identify hours in advance where tornadoes will most likely touch down within a small designated area. Accuracy in timing and geographical positioning play a huge role in successful stormchasing, and we love to educate our guests in the nuances of the developing forecast as the day progresses.

If there were a single drop of water in the entire Sahara desert, Brandon Ivey of stormchasingtour.com could find it. And he’d tell you within a few seconds at what time you’d be driving up to it. Same with tornadoes.

From our inception, stormchasingtour.com has proudly stuck to our roots in running a single chase vehicle with a small tour group, and we work tirelessly to ensure each of our guests has a premium, personalized and mind-blowing chase experience. We’ve done it this way for the past ten years, and we’re going to continue doing it this way for the next ten years.

We place tremendous value on the feedback we hear from our guests and the general stormchasing community each year, and at the conclusion of each season we determine how we can improve the experience for our guests in the upcoming season.

Below we’ve laid out a few reasons why we believe we offer a superior chasing vacation for our guests, and we hope you take them into consideration when booking your next stormchasing adventure.

Why should you chase with us?

STORMCHASINGTOUR.com

Small Crew.

Big Adventure.

Stormchasingtour.com launched in 2012 with a single fully-equipped heavy-duty chase vehicle, and we remain steadfastly committed to running our chase team the same way today. Limiting each tour to 6 guests in one vehicle allows us to provide you with a far superior level of service, education, and vehicle mobility in crucial, time-sensitive severe weather situations. Which means we can get you closer to the action, much more quickly, every single time.

Larger tours need to accommodate and coordinate 16-24 guests in multiple vans in every aspect of the chase day from restaurant seating and hotel rooms to the use of a single restroom at a small town gas station. It happens! Operating a small group grants us the freedom and agility to act as our own team, and creates an environment where we can always attend to your questions and concerns without ever feeling like you’re getting lost in the shuffle.

Meteorologist Brandon Ivey knows a thing or two about pinpoint forecasting for violent storms: Brandon was hand-selected to position chase vehicles directly in the path of tornadoes for the IMAX film ‘Tornado Alley’ and the Discovery Channel reality series ‘Stormchasers.’

Brandon brings his extraordinary skill in identifying storm behavior to get you unprecedented access to the chaotic core of severe storms and tornadic events as they unfold. And with a custom built chasing technology stack keeping the team alert to emerging danger at all times, we never sacrifice the safety of our guests for an incrementally better angle on a storm. The safety of our guests takes precedence at all times.

While you’ll find nearly all the other stormchasing group tour vans fleeing the intense core of severe storms, we’re never going to be intimidated by a few hail dents or window cracks! Crashing storm cores is all part of the crazy experience and the fun of stormchasing, so rest assured, if it’s safe … we’re going in!

Adrenaline By Day.

Comfort By Night.

Long, exhilarating chase days often lead to wet, muddy and exhausted evenings for tour guests, and the last thing you want to return to is an uncomfortable bed, an unsanitary bathroom or a hotel where you don’t feel safe. Stormchasingtour.com proudly stands apart from the multi-van tours and discount tours in providing our guests with premium quality accommodations throughout your tour.

Rather than racing to book the cheapest motels in town like many tour companies, stormchasingtour.com makes every effort to book you in one of the more comfortable, upscale hotel chains popular in the Midwest like Sleep Inn, Holiday Inn, or Fairfield Inn.  We understand you’re on vacation, and you deserve the same accommodations you’d select if you booked the room yourself. Stormchasingtour.com wants you to feel safe, clean and well-rested for each exhilarating new day of your chase-cation!

We believe we’ve established a very successful formula to return our guests to the airport at the end of each tour completely satisfied and utterly floored by their chase experience. From pickup to dropoff, we aim to educate, entertain and surpass the expectations of even the purest weather fanatics: Not only do we want you to experience the captivating birth, rage and death of violent storms and tornadoes, but we want you to experience the beauty and the majesty of the Great Plains. Our days start early and frequently run late filming backlit mammatus clouds and mind-blowing lightning displays. At the end of the day you may feel cold, muddy, and exhausted, but our tour guests wouldn’t have it any other way. At heart, we are stormchasers catering to stormchasers.

Rather than adding multiple vans and cutting costs at the expense of the guest experience, we will continue to run small tours that cater to weather fanatics. We believe we are able to provide the most educational, service oriented, and comfortable tours for our guests on the Plains, and we hope you choose to join us for one of the most incredible weeks of your life.

Brandon Ivey

Meteorologist, Lead forecaster

Brandon might look familiar to hardcore weather enthusiasts: Brandon was featured prominently as the lead forecaster in Discovery Channel’s “Stormchasers” action-reality series and the IMAX feature “Tornado Alley”, where he was responsible for positioning film crews directly in the path of violent tornadoes.

Brandon developed a fascination for severe weather as a young boy growing up in Wichita, Kansas, near the epicenter of Tornado Alley. In high school he began chasing after classes and on weekends, and still vividly remembers the first tornado he tracked down by himself just south of Burton, Kansas at the ripe old age of 16. Brandon went on to earn his meteorology degree from Mississippi State University in 2007, and joined the Discovery Channel production “Stormchasers” in 2009.

From 2009 to 2013 Brandon worked with IMAX filmmaker Sean Casey as lead meteorologist and vehicle navigator, successfully placing the TIV2 (tornado-intercept vehicle) inside several tornadoes and capturing some of the most dramatic tornado footage ever recorded. On May 27, 2013, Brandon and a film crew rode the TIV2 through a violent wedge tornado near Springfield, Kansas, and recorded one of the most-watched tornado videos on Youtube with nearly 3 million views to date. You can watch it here!

In 2014 Brandon launched Stormchasingtour.com, a single vehicle storm chasing tour group that tracks and films tornadoes and other severe weather events throughout the United States. Brandon is based out of Wichita, Kansas, but continues to chase and document weather events year-round for a variety of media outlets.

Brandon’s experience, knowledge, and enthusiasm were on full display, and he truly wants to deliver the best possible experience for his guests. He gets you up close and personal with severe storms, but with safety as the primary consideration. His humble personality and desire to teach helped increase my knowledge and respect for severe weather. These are some of the attributes that set Brandon apart from other chase companies. He drove me all the way from South Texas to North Dakota just for a slight chance of a tornado. I look forward to chasing with Brandon again next season.”
